Water in the Bottom of a Viking Dishwasher in Cambridge: Start Here

Water left in the tub is a drainage fault, and the pump's noise tells you which kind: silence on the drain step points at the control, a strained rattle points at an obstruction. Check the filter and sump, then the hose, then how the cycle ended.

Stand in front of the machine during the drain step and listen. A blocked path and a failed pump leave you with the same puddle at the end, but they do not sound remotely alike on the way there, and that difference is free information most people throw away by walking out of the room.

This one is written around the pump — what it should sound like, what it sounds like when it is fighting an obstruction, and what it sounds like when it has stopped participating altogether. The checks run in the order a technician would run them, and the first three cost nothing.

A wet sump is normal, a full one is not

A film of water sitting in the well at the bottom of the tub is deliberate. It keeps the pump seal from drying out between runs, and it will always be there. What is not normal is water standing over the filter plate, deep enough to move when you swing the door open. Wet tub floor, fine. Flooded tub floor, not fine.

Before you touch it, settle three questions. Does it happen on every programme or only the quick one. Has anything under the sink been altered, or the machine itself shifted. And did this arrive overnight or creep up over months, because those two histories point in opposite directions.

Cambridge adds a constraint worth naming early. In Porter Square and Huron Village the kitchen is frequently upstairs at the back, reached by a service stair too tight to walk an appliance down, which means the diagnosis has to happen where the machine stands. And in a two- or three-family the waste branch is shared, so a slow drain elsewhere in the building can surface first at the dishwasher, which sits lowest on the run.

Start at the bottom of the tub

The filter comes out with your fingers. On most of these machines a cylindrical coarse filter twists out of the sump mouth and a flat fine screen lifts clear underneath it. Whatever has collected on those two components is the first real evidence available, and more often than not it ends the investigation there.

Look at what you have before rinsing it. Fruit stones, seeds and paper labels are a plain obstruction. A brown, slightly tacky film is fat that never reached a temperature high enough to leave with the water, and it comes straight back if nothing else changes. A pale, gritty crust is mineral scale.

Now reach into the sump itself and feel carefully around the impeller. Glass from a tumbler that shattered three washes ago is the usual find, along with the occasional chip of bone. A fragment sitting against the impeller does not stop the pump — it changes its voice, from a steady whirr into a rattle or a strained whine, which is precisely the noise people ring up and describe.

Clean it under a hot tap with a soft brush. Do not use wire, and do not pour anything down the sump. Drain chemicals are not made for this machine and will take seals and pump components with them.

The climb the hose has to make

Water only leaves for good if the hose rises above the tub’s water line before it drops to the waste. That rise is provided either by a high loop fastened up under the countertop or by an air gap through the sink deck. Without it, the pump can run its full step and then quietly watch most of what it moved come back.

Both arrangements are common, and which one your kitchen has depends on what the plumbing inspection wanted at the time the work was signed off. If there is a small chrome fitting standing on the deck next to the tap, that is an air gap, and a silted one spits water into the sink and gets mistaken for a sink fault.

There is one version of this that is not a fault at all in the machine. A dishwasher connected to a waste disposer cannot drain until the knockout plug inside the disposer inlet has been punched out. The history gives it away: nothing has drained properly since the disposer was fitted, and no amount of filter cleaning changes that.

The other post-renovation classic is a folded hose. Countertop work in an East Cambridge galley means the machine comes out and goes back hard against the wall, and there is no depth there for a loop of hose to sit in.

The machine believes it finished

Now separate a pump that never ran from a pump that ran and got nowhere, because you can hear the difference. Silence where the drain note should be — the cycle simply advancing — puts the problem on the command side, at the control or the wiring. A pump that labours, rattles or whines and still leaves the water behind puts it on the path.

A displayed code is a starting point and nothing more. It reports what the control observed, which is usually that a step did not complete in the time it expected, and that is a symptom rather than a component.

Most machines offer a way to cancel and force the drain step. Use it as a test, not as a fix. If a forced drain empties the tub completely but a full wash still finishes wet, the machine is ending the step early rather than being blocked, and that is a different repair from the one you were about to attempt.

The gradual failure nobody notices

The slow version of this fault is scale. Mineral deposit narrows the passages through the sump and coats the filter mesh, so every cycle leaves a fraction more behind than the one before it. Nobody notices anything for a year, and then a glass comes out of the top rack with water pooled in its base.

The tells arrive before the standing water does: powder left undissolved in the dispenser cup, a film on glassware, plastics coming out wet. People change detergent at this point, which changes nothing, because detergent behaviour here is a symptom and not a cause.

Whether local water is hard enough to be part of your story is worth asking your water utility rather than assuming, and it is genuinely variable. Cambridgeport ground floors rebuilt in the last two decades, Huron Village houses with plumbing of three different eras inside one wall, and the newer buildings near Lechmere in East Cambridge are not all drinking the same water through the same pipes.

Where this stops being a homeowner job

Three symptoms end the DIY stage immediately: a burning or hot-electrical smell, a breaker that has tripped, or water outside the machine on the floor. Kill the power at the breaker and stop testing. Everything after that point involves a live circuit and a wet enclosure.

What a technician establishes is what listening cannot: current draw at the pump while it is commanded, whether the impeller spins freely by hand, whether the drain line holds pressure end to end, and what the control was actually asking for when it gave up. That is the difference between replacing a pump and cleaning a hose.

Does pre-rinsing dishes prevent this?

No. Rinsing washes away what the detergent is formulated to work on while leaving the debris that genuinely causes blockages exactly where it was. Scrape the plate instead. Fruit stones, shell fragments and paper labels are the items that travel down into the sump. A machine that blocks repeatedly is describing loading habits, not rinsing habits.

Is standing water a reason to stop using the machine?

Stop if you smell hot electrics, if a breaker has tripped, or if water is escaping onto the floor. Otherwise, bail the tub out and leave it until someone can look at it. Running cycle after cycle in the hope it clears itself usually compacts the blockage and adds a fresh load of soil on top.

Is a little water in the bottom normal?

A shallow amount sitting in the recess is intentional and keeps the pump seal wet, so do not chase it. The useful comparison is against how the machine looked six months ago. If the level has clearly risen, or water now covers the filter plate instead of sitting below it, the drain path is losing ground.
